Obituary of Wayne M. Busse

Please share a memory of Wayne to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Wayne M. Busse, who left us on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at the age of 68. A larger-than-life figure in every sense, Wayne was the kind of man whose presence filled a room with warmth, laughter, and love. His spirit was contagious, and his generosity knew no bounds. He was a man who made a difference in the lives of everyone he met.

Wayne was born on August 3, 1956, in Peekskill, NY to Philip M. and Elizabeth (Chadwick) Busse. He graduated from Walter Panas High School in 1974, where his interests in cars, sports, and music blossomed and continued throughout his life. After graduating from high school, Wayne enlisted and served four years in the U.S. Navy. In 1979, he married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Doreen (Cozzi), and spent 45 wonderful years together until his death.

From a young age, Wayne was no stranger to hard work. He was a foreman for the NYC District Council of Carpenters Local #2287, Floor Coverers Union, for many years until his retirement in 2011. However, he also had an affinity for adventure and fun. One of Wayne’s greatest adventures was raising his sons, Matthew and Christopher. As a father, he could not have been prouder of their achievements. He was a dedicated Coach for several of his sons’ teams, including Peekskill LaPolla Little League, CYO basketball, and WPBA baseball. In the off-season, Wayne enjoyed numerous cross-country trips with his family and loved the bright lights of Vegas.

Wayne was the ultimate stand-up guy – always the first to offer a helping hand. His heart was as big as his smile, and he never hesitated to put others before himself. A true pillar of his community, he volunteered as a Board Member and President of the Meadows Condominium Association in Peekskill for almost 40 years. He also assisted the residents of Villa St. Francis in recent years and quickly became a beloved handyman and groundskeeper. Wayne was the one you could count on – rain or shine, day or night – never asking for anything in return.

Wayne’s sense of humor was legendary. His laugh was infectious, and he had a knack for turning the darkest days into moments of joy. A natural storyteller, Wayne could always be found in the center of a crowd, making everyone feel like they were part of something special. His unwavering positivity and deep loyalty to his family and friends left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Doreen; sons, Navy Captain Matthew (Kate) and Army Lieutenant Colonel Christopher (Emily); grandchildren, Ava and Ryan; loving mother, Elizabeth; sister, Donna; and granddogs, Dexter and Bugsy. He is predeceased by his father, Philip, and brother-in-law, Francis Sokolik. He holds the honor of being favorite uncle to his many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews, in addition to being “Dad #2” to Katie (Sal) and Jessica. It is no surprise that he was loved and adored by many friends who became family. Wayne’s legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched with his humor and kindness. We take comfort in knowing that Wayne is now cruising the open road of eternity, heading toward the next great adventure. You were one of a kind, Wayne-O, and we will never forget you. You are in our hearts, always and forever.
