With great love and sorrow, the family of Louis A. Garber announces his peaceful passing on September 15, 2025, at the age of 95.
Louis was blessed to have lived a long and happy life marked by many extraordinary journeys.
Born on August 7, 1930 in St. Leonhard, South Tyrol, Italy, he moved to Germany with his family at a young age. As a young man, Louis struck out on a different path than most of his siblings as he crossed the continent and vast ocean to seek a new future, coming first to Canada before settling in New York.
At this pivotal moment, Louis’s path crossed with his future wife, Whaja Lee, who was on a journey of her own from South Korea to Georgia and, finally, New York. Here, she quite literally made a detour when she got lost and stopped to ask Louis for directions. From that point forward, their journeys were intertwined with the fateful encounter leading to 48 years of marriage.
As they built their lives together, Louis also successfully built a career in Finance, where he worked for the Depository Trust Company for many years until his retirement. On the home front, Louis and Whaja raised two twin daughters together, Sonia and Rita. Throughout this time, a love of travel was evident as the family took many camping trips and vacations together, both across the country and abroad.
Once Whaja also retired, the couple was ready to embark on a new adventure, traveling across the country in an RV for over a year. After this amazing experience, they settled in San Felipe, Mexico, to enjoy the beach and mountains. The final leg of Louis’s journey was coming back home to Peekskill, NY with his wife to be near family.
Besides traveling, Louis had many other interests — he loved to play chess and was an avid sports fan of nearly all sports but most especially his beloved Yankees. Louis was always ready with a smile and a joke to make you laugh. He had a zest for life that couldn’t be contained and approached life with a generosity of spirit that left an indelible mark on those
around him. As we celebrate his life, we know that his cherished memory with stay in our hearts forever.
