Obituary of Grace M. Charles

Grace Marie Charles (nee Sgro) died July 21, 2016 after a courageous six year battle against lung cancer. Grace was born to the late Antonino and Teresa (Albanese) Sgro on May 22, 1937. She was raised on Highland Avenue in Verplanck with her parents, sister Rose Ann, grandfather Girolamo Albanese (dec.), aunt Angie (Albanese) Messa, uncle Onofrio Messa (dec.) and cousin Ronald Messa. Gracie graduated from Hendrick Hudson High School in 1955 and married her high school sweetheart, Thomas Charles on May 9, 1959 at St. Patrick’s Church in Verplanck. Her husband Tommy predeceased her in 1977. She was a Montrose resident of Lent Avenue from 1960 to present. Grace was a graduate of the Westchester Beautician School after which she worked as a hair stylist out of her home and for Joe’s Hair Salon in Peekskill. She later changed careers and studied to become a real property appraiser and thereafter became the Assistant Assessor for the Town of Cortlandt Assessor’s Office, where she proudly worked for over 40 years. Grace is survived by her aunt Concetta (Sgro) Sullivan, aunt Angie (Albanese) Messa, sister Rose Ann (Sgro) Dean, three daughters Pamela (partner Laura Fredricks), Dina (husband G. Joseph McGuire) and Carissa and her two adoring grandchildren Michaela and Gabriel Capicotto. Visitation is Sunday, July 24th, from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Joseph F. Nardone Funeral Home, Peekskill, NY. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, July 25th at 10am, St. Patrick’s Church, Verplanck. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
