Obituary of Jose E. Romero

Please share a memory of Jose to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Jose Romero, 70, of New York, passed away in the morning of January 30th after fighting Covid-19. Born and raised in Concepcion Las Minas, Jose had grown up in harsh conditions. Having to support himself and his family at the time, Jose started working as an adolescent and went on to forge his own life. Upon arriving in America in the 80s, Jose spent no time worrying and focused his energy on work, family and himself. Like many other immigrants, Jose did everything in his power to send money that he made back to his children in Guatemala. And when the opportunity arose to provide a better life for his seven kids, Jose aided their arrival every step of the way.

The foundation of Jose’s legacy can be traced back to his over two decade long career at Walmart, as a Sportings Goods sales clerk. Suffice to say that there wasn’t a single customer who frequented Walmart that didn’t know Jose and his warm smile. Hunting licenses, ammunition, automotive parts, camping equipment, the man knew it all and always more than willing to chat. He loved the work and he loved conversing, truly in his element when it came to staying active. Even well into retirement, Jose picked up a second job at BOCES in Yorktown as a Science Kit Assembler. And true to his character, he’d be up bright and early to work each and everyday with vigor. The height of the pandemic didn’t make him falter, Jose lived life without fear, he was a man who put his mind to a goal and didn’t stop till he achieved it.

All those who knew him can agree the man never once complained about his due, never took the easy way out, and was more than willing to help whoever came his way. He was a loving husband, a caring brother, a genuine fighter, and above all else a magnificent father. He is survived by eight children and twenty grandchildren, all of whom carry with them Jose’s positivity, love and determination.
