Obituary of Cheryle B. Chewning

Please share a memory of Cheryle to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Cheryle Belinda Chewning was born March 10, 1956, in the Bronx, NY to the late Olena Sexton and Trent Sexton. Cheryle passed to her eternal rest on February 5, 2022, at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY. At an early age,

Cheryle was a member of Abiding Presence Church in the Bronx, NY. Cheryle completed her education and profession in the Bronx. She graduated from James Monroe High School in June 1974. She attended Lehman College where she received her Bachelor’s of Arts in Education in June 1978. She worked at Trinity Lutheran School for 4 years.

She then married Albert “Mike” Chewning on September 29, 1979. From this union, they have two daughters, Nicole and Monique.

In 1982 she began working for the New York City Department of Education and moved to Mount Vernon, NY. She attended the College of New Rochelle where she received her Masters in Education in 1988. In 1993 she moved to Peekskill, NY where she resided for 27 years. Cheryle worked as an Elementary school teacher at P.S  93 in the Bronx for 36 years and retired in 2016.

Our mother was not just a teacher, she was an educator, a mentor, a therapist, a confidant, a leader, a woman of exceptional perseverance, and most of all a friend. She brought people together and always wanted everyone she knew and loved to be comfortable, happy, and most of all feel welcomed. She lived her life practicing what she preached unapologetically, not only was she the example, she was the rule. She taught my sister and I how to be people of service, leaders, to have class, integrity in everything we do and project the utmost strength and resilience through every aspect of our lives.

She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, neighbor, friend, colleague, and most of all her greatest treasure was her ability to teach her students. Not only a teacher in the classroom but she imparted her wisdom on everyone she came in contact with as a teacher of life.

Cheryle leaves to cherish her memories, husband of 42 years Albert Chewning, two daughters, Nicole and Monique Chewning, two brothers, Donald Sexton and Trent Sexton Jr., Darnell Sexton (sister-in-law), nephews, Trent B. Sexton and Jamel Sexton. And a host of cousins, friends, students, and extended family. Cheryle is preceded in death by her parents Olena and Trent Sexton as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and her grandparents
