Obituary of Michael M. Basler
Michael Martin Basler, age 74 of Esopus, New York, passed away on January 24, 2023, at the New York State Veterans Home at Montrose.
Michael was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Martin and Frida Basler on January 31, 1948. Mike as he was called by everyone, was one of ten siblings. He was a graduate of the Cincinnati public schools. He spent his teenage years working in his parent’s bakery. In February on 1967, he enlisted in the Marines. With pride and bravery, he served his country in Vietnam. Mike saw what war could do to people and he wanted to do something good for mankind after his experiences in Vietnam. His calling was nursing. He graduated from Long Island University in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He worked at Mont Sinai Hospital from 1982 until his retirement in 2008. Mike was an amazing nurse. Well-liked, respected, and highly skilled.
Mike had many other amazing qualities. He was an avid runner and completed 2 NYC marathons with respectable finishing times. He loved working out at the YMCA. He loved the car shows, mostly because he would meet up with another veteran and chat. Once he said “Semper Fi brother “you were hooked with a handshake and a smile. Mike adored his pets. He could be found settled in his armchair with a pet on each side: his beloved pug Junior and his recently departed cat Lulu. He would go to any lengths for his pets. Mike also liked figure skating. He especially loved watching his son James and was present for every performance, practice, and warm-up. When he was no longer able to attend, he would smile when he saw the videos of James. Mike loved to eat. Any kind of food as long as it was tasty.
