Obituary of John A. Bernabo

John Bernabo died on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at McLeod Seacoast Medical Center with his wife and daughters at his side.
John was a resident of Calabash, NC since 2006 when he and Trudy retired in the beautiful community of The Meadowlands.
John retired from the Carpenter’s Local 279 in Westchester County, NY. He was an active and proud union member.  He was also a member of the Peekskill Elks and then later the Calabash Elks.
 

John was born in the Bronx, NY and moved with his family as a teenager to Tarrytown, NY. He was a graduate of Sleepy Hollow High School where he met his wife of 61 years, Trudy (Kirby) Bernabo.  Trudy and John moved to Continental Village (Cortlandt Manor), NY shortly after marrying and raised their two daughters, Joanne and Jill there. They loved the lake community and John was an active member in the Continental Village Rod and Gun club and often cooked at the game dinners.  John was an avid fisherman, often organizing trips off the Long Island Sound and even organized several trips to Costa Rica.  He loved vacationing at the NJ Shore and later in the Outerbanks of NC with his family. John also loved to cook and share family recipes and traditions.
 

John is predeceased by his parents, Andrew and Johanna (Hannigan) Bernabo and his brother James Bernabo.
He is survived by his wife Trudy Bernabo (Kirby), his daughters, Joanne Morrone and son-in-law Chris of SC and Jill Bernabo of NC.

His greatest joy was watching his grandchildren grow up, Melissa Rae and John Morrone, both in NJ. He has two sister-in-laws, Shirley Notorangelo and Mary Freda Calabro, both in Westchester NY. He is Uncle Johnny to many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2023, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at Joseph F. Nardone Funeral Home, 414 Washington Street, Peekskill, NY.
