Mu-mu,
How my heart breaks writing this note, as I had hoped to spend more time with you but it was not God's will. I am grateful for ALL the time we shared together, thanks be to God.
As a mother, you did not fail in any of your goals to raise your children well. You raised us to be educated, respectable and loving adults, believing in all the spiritual and positive attributes, you demonstrated, to the very end.
Your priority was to instill in us God's will and to remain faithful to HIM, in all circumstances. You showed us how valiant you were in wanting to go with the Lord, before the doctor's diagnoses indicated otherwise, asking to be released to "Papa", as you knew your time with us was closing in. You never demonstrated fear or hesitancy, instead, you showed courage knowing your faith would carry you through.
As a best friend, we shared many stories and learning opportunities-educationally, physically, emotionally, spiritually and mentally. You taught me well. For that reason, you will always be my best friend and true confidant.
God gave me the opportunity to take care of you and be beside you when you needed me the most. Thank you, Jesus! You were never alone. While you closed your eyes, for the last time, I prayed to God the following:
Jesus, as a child, I opened my arms to receive this woman, as my mother, embracing her with love and admiration. Now, I release her to you, as you receive her, on the other side, with open arms.
Mami, I love and adore you. I will truly miss you; I know you live in paradise with Jesus and God but your legacy will live with me forever.

I have known the Santiago family for more than a few years and specifically Dona Santiago and Diane going back to my childhood. I moved to the Highbridge area and was transferred to Sacred Heart Elementary school. Shortly after joining the third grade of Mrs. Dematos, I believe that was the teacher’s name. Shortly thereafter, I was blessed to meet a quite young girl named Diane and by extension her family. As a young kid, I can recall seeing Dona Santiago dropping off and picking up her kids at the school waiting area. Dona Santiago has always been an upbeat, kind, and welcoming individual to everyone that crossed her path; i.e. parents, teachers, and kids.
One of my earliest memories of Dona Santiago was visiting Dona Santiago beauty salon on Ogden Ave in the Bronx. My mother went to Doña Santiago beauty Salon, to have her hair styled. Doña Santiago was a very funny, complimenting person, and an amusing conversationalist the entire time she was working on my mother’s hair. Additionally, I can vividly remember her chatting directly with me and treating me like family. I recall so many positive interactions with Dona Santiago; but I will only remark on just a few of my memories. She had an offbeat sense of humor, a zest for life and kind way she received people with open arms. I could o pine of many different memories of Dona Santiago but will keep it to just a few. I remember a few years later, during my teen years in High school, I called Dona Santiago’s house to speak with Diane. She picked up the house phone (the land line) and she told me that Diane was not there now. Dona Santiago informed me that she had closed her beauty salon business and opened a new beauty supply store in the Gun Hill Road area of the Bronx. I told her that I could help her if she needed any assistance organizing the merchandise on the shelves. In addition to properly pricing each item on the shelves. Given the fact I was working part-time as a stock boy, for one of the stores on Third Ave in the Bronx. She accepted my offer and was very grateful for me helping her organize the shelves that day. I recall most of all was her positive spirit and jokes that day. The most recent memory was of Dona Santiago’s birthday celebration at Diane and Jose home. I was conversating with one of Dianes friend in Spanish, at the dinner table and Dona Santiago was amazed and amused of the Spanish annunciation and diction. She jokingly told me to stop talking in Spanish, so as not to waste all my words in Spanish. God bless Dona Santiago ability to find humor in everything.
In closing, I regret never sharing with her how much I appreciated and respected Dona Santiago. Most importantly, the fact I never thanked her for being so kind. Dona Santiago, in many ways, reminded me of my loving and saintly grandmother Dona Barbosa. Dona Santiago, I know you are in heaven now, based on how clearly it is expressed in Romans 10:9-10 of the bible. Therefore, when you see my grandmother in heaven; please tell her I love and miss her deeply.
Lastly, I thank Diane and the Santiago family, for allowing me to share so many wonderful experiences over these 40+ years with you guys.

Taylor and I thank you for the warm hospitality you showed us and will never forget the laughter and joy we shared together. It’s a blessing to know you and we’re glad that you’re now at peace, in your new home, with your Lord and Savior, Jesus The Christ. Continue to rest in peace, love you always, Taylor and Virginia.

Hilda will always hold a special place in our hearts. She always loved sharing stories of how Carmelo and Gil ate her out of house and home.
