Obituary of Margaret Ann Hughes

Margaret Ann Hughes, a longtime resident of the Town of Cortlandt, passed away at her home Saturday morning, January 13th, after a long illness.

A retired real estate agent, Margaret Ann was also a past president of the Peekskill Garden Club. Back in the 1980s and early 1990s, she worked as a clerk for the town’s Planning Board and Zoning Board. 

Margaret Ann loved home decorating, gardening, fashion, and her husband, Thomas Owen Hughes, whom she met as a teenager at Peekskill High School. Tom predeceased her in 2017. 

She was born in Peekskill in 1935. Her father, Edward Crawford, served as Peekskill’s Fire Chief from 1958 to 1970. Her mother, Margaret Mary Crawford was Peekskill’s City Clerk for many years.   

In recent decades Margaret Ann attended mass at the Holy Spirit Church, where Tom served as an usher.

Margaret Ann is survived by her sister Jeanne Heller;  her four children, Kathleen Hughes (Thomas Casciato), Thomas Owen Hughes, Jr.(Diana Ortiz) , Kevin Hughes (Amy Hughes)  and Timothy Hughes and five grandchildren: Peter and William Casciato; Jack and Dan Hughes; and Stephanie Ortiz. 

Margaret was also proud of and enjoyed her large, extended family.

Visitation will be held at Joseph F. Nardone Funeral home on Saturday, January 20, 2024, from 9:00 am to 10:45 am 

Mass of Christian burial will be held at The Church of the Assumption on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at 11:00 am

Interment to follow at Assumption Cemetery.
