Obituary of Richard Carter, Jr.

Please share a memory of Richard to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Richard Carter Jr., a beloved native of Waynesboro, Georgia, passed away on May 4, 2024, one day shy of his 97th birthday. Born on May 5, 1927, to Idanna Cooper and Richard Carter Sr., Richard Carter Jr. lived a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories.

Richard attended Waynesboro High School, where he earned his high school diploma before embarking on a career journey that spanned decades. For half a century, Richard toiled as a farmer, his journey leading him from the heart of Georgia to the bustling streets of Peekskill, New York, where he retained his country charm. Transitioning from farming, he became a laborer at Stonegate Apartments until his well-deserved retirement. Not one to sit idly, he served as a bus monitor in the Peekskill City School District until the age of 88, relishing in the joy of connecting with children and brightening their days.

Beyond his professional endeavors, Richard was known for his zest for life. He found excitement in games of chance, indulging in his passion for gambling, card games, shooting craps, and the company of good cigars or pipes. His love for music, particularly old-school Motown hits by artists like Smokey Robinson, filled his days with rhythm and soul. His love for trivia and old-school music remained constants throughout his life.

Richard’s quick wit and wisdom were hallmarks of his character, often showcased through his trademark gesture – the “fickle finger of fate,” a nod to the iconic 1960s TV show. His infectious laughter and Southern charm endeared him to countless friends and family members, earning him (or his finger) the nickname “the fickle finger of fate” for his knack for delivering witty or wise remarks with a pointed finger.

Richard found comfort in the familiar voices of his grandchildren and sister, his face aglow with affection. Richard's culinary delight lay in soul food, especially his daughter's sweet potato pies, a treat he eagerly anticipated. With an arsenal of southern sayings and a flair for style, he left an indelible mark on those who knew him.

In his final moments, Richard found solace in the familiar melodies of gospel music, a testament to his lifelong faith and personal spiritual journey.

Richard's legacy lives on through his children: Regina Carter-Watson, Idena Cole, Richard (Bobo), Yvonne Clarke, Ronald Carter, Rita Carter, Rickie Carter, Rosalind Sharpe, Robert Carter, Greg Carter, Tyrone Carter, Richard (Richie) Carter III, (Rachel Shealy), Justin Carter and Cassie Post and his beloved Sister, Bernice Johnson.

Richard was predeceased by his parents Idanna Cooper and Richard Carter Sr., Brother, John Bynes, Henry Bynes, and Sister Ella Bynes, and his children Sharon Brickhouse, Ricky T. Carter, Bettie Ann, and Wayne Kall.

He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cherished family members, and friends who will forever hold him in their hearts.

In honoring Richard's wishes, a private cremation will be held to commemorate his remarkable life. Though he may be physically gone, his spirit will continue to shine brightly in the memories and stories shared by those who knew and loved him.

Rest in peace, Richard Carter Jr. You will be dearly missed but never forgotten. Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
