Howie was a man with integrity.
His legacy was to inspire others and I knew he knew his impact on others .He would always share stories of adventures with anyone. He was an avid outdoorsman, which had to been passed down from tradition. He taught many hunters and their children. His legacy was knowledge and experience. Howie , we will continue to honor your memory with the adventures you shared with all of us through stories we will continue to tell our children and their children. We will honor you by continuing to expose them the way you exposed us. You will always be our one and only favorite trump supporter!

Dear Howard,
We were lucky to have the chance to know you through Sharon. The first time we met at Sheena’s plantation, you became the kids’ instant hero—leading them like a charismatic commander, even winning over those rebellious pre-teens who usually resisted everything but mischief.
Your humor and lively spirit were magnetic, drawing in not just the kids but the adults too. While the kids were following you, we adults were hanging onto your every word—whether you were telling tales of deer hunting, sharing nature’s secrets, your own life stories, or cracking jokes that carried nuggets of life wisdom. Somehow you always made even the most ordinary moment extraordinary.
I’ll never forget that dinner at the Japanese restaurant. When asked what you wanted, you flashed that signature grin and said, “There’s not too many things in life I don’t like.” It was such a simple line, just like you—finding joy in just about everything and sharing it with everyone around you.
Howard, you had an extraordinary gift, the ability to make everyone around you laugh effortlessly. Your spirit will continue to inspire us to find humor in life, to laugh a little louder, and to live a little freer. May you rest in eternal paradise, surrounded by peace and light.

My beloved big brother. My heart was fullest and most content when I was with him. Being in his presence was being home. He was my hero and my protector all of my life. I always felt safe around him. He enriched my life beyond measure. He introduced me to his treasured friends, amazing wife and daughter. He introduced me to wonderful music, of many genres, and artists we enjoyed together. He took me to new, exciting, and interesting places for fun experiences.
When we were young children, we played all day together, mostly games that he entirely made up. He had a wonderful imagination. For example, we played cowboys and Indians wearing our Roy Rogers and Dale Evans outfits together. Or, he would be the make-believe chef and concoct food, using all the condiments in the refrigerator and I would be the make-believe restaurant customer that sampled and tasted the concoction he made. Serving it to me with a towel over his arm, he would wait while I tasted it and be so pleased to see my favorable response.
He had such a wonderful smile and sense of humor. We laughed a lot together.
I always thought, and often said out loud, that I never want to live a day of my life without my brother.
Through all the sunshine and clouds in life, he was my rainbow. He will be deeply missed and loved and cherished forever.
Since my mom and her siblings are gone, he was the only one who still called me Marala, and I called him Howala.
I will always lift my glass to you, my Howie, my Howala, until we meet again.
Love,
Mary

“Howard the Great”
By Scarlette Reece
Your beautiful smile, was like the warmth of a thousand suns
It filled us with light, friendship, and fun
Your new home now, in the Heavens above
As you watch over us, with so much divine love
A devoted husband, dad and amazing friend
You’ll always be with us, around every bend
In laughter, in smiles, heartache and tears
You’ll be with us in spirit, throughout the years
I imagined, as you crossed to the other side
Your daughter, Jessica, with arms opened wide
A happy reunion, for her and for you
We find comfort in knowing this to be true
Our love for you is eternal, there’s nothing greater
So this is not farewell, but see you later
I love you, my fellow red-head!

My brother Terry and I met Mary and Howard when we were 7 and 8, they were 8 and 9. Our parents were friends so the 4 of us hung out together. We were like the 4 musketeers. As we got older, we went our separate ways but we remained in touch. Then we (Mary, Howie and I) reunited in Co-op City. Howie was always a warm and friendly person and I know he will be dearly missed by all who knew him .

Howard Slaughter. “Howie" was full of life and charm. Whenever we spoke, texted, or wrote, Howard would always refer to himself as “your favorite boy cousin” and without a doubt, he was.
Howard's mother, my Aunt Irene, was one of my father Sam's four unique, and sometimes hilarious, Wecker sisters. They were all strong, resilient women and Aunt Irene was one of my favorites. I was nearly three years older than Howard and four years older than his sister Mary, and whenever we visited our grandparents in the Bronx, I would hang out and play as much as possible with Howie and Mary. It was always a treat to be invited to Aunt Irene and Uncle Joe’s beautiful apartment for a sleepover with Howie and Mary.
Howard was outgoing, good-natured, handsome, and witty. He loved his family, his friends, and his country. With his sister Mary, his parents, and his many Wecker uncles, aunts, and cousins, he shared a love of learning, music, art, literature, nature, humor, and people. Howie and I also shared dimples.
The last time Howard and I saw each other in person was at a Wecker family reunion in August 2012. We kept planning to get together, most recently discussing a visit with Howie, Sharon, and Mary to my home near the ocean in Wilmington, NC or even a potential cruise. Too often, we put aside plans with those we love and cherish most. Our last communication was a Happy Birthday text from him in September. I never dreamed that Howie would be gone so soon.
Howie, you were a beautiful soul and I will miss you dearly. Your memory is a blessing. May God bless you, Howie. May God hold you close and may you be at peace in God’s love and light.
Love always, Your favorite NC girl cousin,
Marlene
Sharing a photo of Howard from the Wecker family reunion in 2012. It was taken with my phone camera at that time (iPhone 4, I think) so the quality is not that good plus he closed his eyes, although Howie's beautiful smile (and dimples) shine through.

My uncle Howie was an adventurous well articulated man it seemed as if he lived without any doubt and spoke only with certainty. He inspired others especially me to be outspoken as he was. I can see him in myself and am reminded of his loving hugs and his laughter that filled the room. I still fill his presence lingering .as if he could still be here watching over us. I could only wish that he is content, and his memories will never die.

My cousin, Howie, was one of the kindest human beings I have ever known, and I am heartbroken to hear of his sudden passing. For many years, when all the cousins gathered at our Grandparent’s apartment in NYC for every Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter vacation, Howie always greeted all of us with a smile. He showed a genuine personal interest in how you were doing, making even us younger cousins feel loved and valued. When Howie joined the Marines at age 18 and was stationed in Vietnam, I began to write to him. I will never know the exact circumstances Howie may have endured in Vietnam, but I do know that he took the time to answer the letters of this then 13-year old. On a couple occasions he even surprised me by sending me beautiful Vietnamese greeting cards with exquisite satin pictures. That was Howie…thoughtful, kind and caring. While the family holiday gatherings ceased to occur after our grandparents passed away, we still tried to keep in touch. With every holiday card and emailed message, Howie and I would discuss trying to get together. Marriage, children, work and life in general often made it hard to do that – which I now deeply regret. I will miss Howie’s wit, charm and handsome face and hope he knows just how much I loved and valued him as a cousin and friend. Sending my love and heartfelt condolences to Sharon, Mary and all who knew and loved him. Rest in peace dear cousin.

I met Howie while we were both officers in 2007 thru introduction by a court clerk Larry Russo when he heard after being married to my wife Rosie we moved to Peekskill. Larry said , You MUST meet Howie, and with a phone call Howie came down to the clerks office , we shook hands and little did I know the beautiful friendship ahead for me and my future family in befriending him and wonderful Sharon.
Howie became a big brother figure for myself in high respect because of his mentor like manner. In his big heart he offered favors where he saw he could be of help. There was nothing he would not offer to who he considered a friend. My wife Rosie adored him like a big brother also , and to my daughter growing up he was “Dada Howie”.
Howie had a way to bring the best out of anyone the minute he greeted you with his radiant smile. We will keep amazing memories of this unforgettable
friend who was like family. In reflection that first day meeting Howie was like Larry knew he was giving a gift , it sure was.

As the younger brother of Joseph Fernández best friend of Howie and growing up in NYC. Just a couple a years ago along with Félix best friend we gather around and laugh and discussed a bit of the old area where we all grew up in. The life we’ve had and since I departed NYC some time ago. However couldn’t help but notice such a great smile he always displayed. My memory of him will always be such a warm impressionable person and the great smile he shared with all who came before him. I Nelson Fernandez will forever display his picture on my family wall reminding me I had the pleasure of knowing what a great person he was. May he shine when arrives at the pearly gates of heaven. Cousin Howard was my mentor and someone I always looked up to. Someone I could always go to for advice. He taught me how to shoot when I was a kid, took me hunting, fishing, and camping, and we had many great adventures together, and with his Marine brothers and hunting buddies. He is also the reason I got on the job, following in his footsteps. He always said I was "Slaughter trained," and he was right. I am a better man for having him in my life. I have so many fond memories of him, and my heart is broken that he is gone too soon. I will sorely miss him.

An uncle to Chaidie, Enjoli, Sonia, Logan, Luke, Rosie and godfather to Olivia. You have enlightened our lives in so many ways. Because of you Chaidir and Chaidie are avid hunters. Enjoli still talks about her snorkeling adventure with you when she was a little girl. We’re trying to come to terms that we lost you physically. Our brother, our friend, our confidant, you will be forever in our hearts.

Q: What will you never forget about Howard?
A: This is hard to do because I have a lifetime of memories about Howard. I will never forget all the adventures we had together from growing up as children, hunting, fishing, backpacking trips. Most of all joining the United States Marine Corps. Parris Island was a subject we always talked about and that was almost 60 years ago. The training was tough but we both hung in there. We supported each other the best we could. Graduation day was one of the best days of our lives at the time. Our parents and Mary came to the graduation proud as ever.
There are many more especially something that happened to us on one of our backpacking trips in the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York.
