Obituary of Sophie Komeshian

Sophie Komeshian entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, December 13, 2017, just shy of her 104th birthday at Cortlandt Healthcare in Cortlandt Manor, NY. As one of the last survivors of the Armenian Genocide, Sophie was born in Everek, Turkey and immigrated to the U.S. in 1921. She married and raised her family in Yonkers, NY and was proud to say she had nourished countless children in the Yonkers Public Schools as she was their head cook. You could always find her in the church kitchen or preparing meals for the Seminary students and she reveled in the mmms and yumms. Her love of cooking was passed down through the generations and she is immortalized in her treasured recipes (including her Simit Cookies and Apple Chocolate Chip Cake). She was an excellent card player, often winning at Crazy Eights or Rummy and she was a whiz with dice as well, taking no prisoners when playing Yahtzee. Her knitting skills were exemplary and her beautiful creations included sweaters, dresses, hats and blankets for her family and friends. She also made beautiful baby clothes and christening outfits for newborns. Left to cherish and remember Sophie are her living children, Raffy Komeshian of Garrison, NY, and Sara Hatchadoorian of Mahopac, NY; grandchildren, Andrew Hatchadoorian, Caryl (Joe Fontana) Minard, Christina Komeshian, Laura (Daryl Birger) Komeshian, Danielle (Stephen) Rydberg; great-grandchildren, Ani, Tahlene & Axel Rydberg and Benjamin & Jack Birger. Sophie was preceded in death by her husband Harry Komeshian, son Stephen Komeshian, 2 unknown twin children, great-grandchildren Tomas & Kristofer Rydberg and son-in-law Raymond Hatchadoorian. Family, friends and others whose lives Sophie has touched are invited to the Nardone Funeral Home in Peekskill, NY from 1-5pm on Sunday, December 17, 2017, to reminisce, grieve, support each other and chat.
