Joan M. Sewalk of Peekskill, NY died peacefully at Phelps Memorial Hospital on February 21, 2017. Joan was 90 years young, born June 26, 1926 to John V. and Grace Clinton Carlin. She married James M. Sewalk on October 16, 1946 at the Church Of The Assumption in Peekskill. The mother of 16 children, her life’s fulfillment came from her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a woman of strong beliefs and values, ones she imparted to family and friends. Famous for her energy, she lived her life to the fullest. Joan’s career began at the City Bank of New York in Manhattan, continued at St. Joseph’s Home in Peekskill, and concluded at Peekskill City Court. She was committed to her community and volunteerism at the Assumption School and Church where she was a lifetime parishioner. Joan leaves behind countless friends whom she dearly loved. Joan is survived by her children Jane Sewalk, James C. Sewalk, Jill Travis, Jack Sewalk, Julie Vangelder, Joel Sewalk, Janel Johnson, Janice Shulman, Janene DeChristopher, Jody Wakefield, Jeff Sewalk, Joyce Cuccia, Joyann Sewalk and Jessica Love. She is survived by 25 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and much adored nieces, nephews and cousins. Joan was predeceased by daughter Joan Dabbs, son Jay Mark Sewalk and siblings William, John, Grace and Romayne. Donations in Joan’s honor can be made to the “Church Of The Assumption” and the “Franciscan Sisters of Peekskill”. Calling hours are Friday, Feb 24, 2-4 and 7-9pm at Joseph F. Nardone Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass is Saturday, Feb 25, 10am at The Church of Assumption. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
