Our family dearly loves Dick and Sally. We enjoyed visiting with Dick and learning about his life and adventures while growing up, teaching, and coaching in New York. I was very sorry to learn of the death of Coach Bub. He had a huge positive impact on many, many students at Hastings High, especially those who played for him on Hastings' football and wrestling teams.
I hadn't seen him for many, many years until the 50th reunion for the class of '66. He was at the game (a loss to Edgemont, I believe) and he didn't seem much older than the guy who patrolled the sidelines with his henchmen of our day, Tim Doyle and Dick Perri. He remembered details of games that I had gotten all wrong in my head... he remembered details of games HE played for Poughkeepsie High (I think I've got that right).
He must have been pretty good because he loved it so much... that came across every afternoon at practice. He really was inspiring. And chalk talk was never boring, because Mr. Bub presented the dives and the bellies and the blocking assignments with flair: "Boys, three things can happen when you put the ball in the air.... And two of them are not good."
We all played as hard as we could for him; it was serious business. Some of the stars past who were close were at that reunion game, including Ed McKernan, Pete Muriak, John Hirniak, Frank McCabe, Tom Murray and others. I think Don Russell and Joe Kennedy saw him later that night. My brother, Scott, tells many stories of his time playing for Mr. Bub.
One more quote: "Boys..." he'd say at the beginning of the season, drawing circles on the board, "This is the 5-4 defense and it was invented by a coach a lot smarter than me." How could THAT be? He was a coach's coach and a teacher's teacher. And he lives on in a many hearts and minds.

If I ever had to claim one person as my 'HERO' it would be Coach Bub. He was the only teacher at HHS who took a personal interest in me. He coached me in both football and wrestling.
Coach encouraged me to enlist in the Marines, and afterwards, to apply to Manhattan College (even though I was not a good student at HHS). He got me accepted at Manhattan.
After our 50th class reunion I wrote him a letter thanking him for all he had done for me, and any other students that he had sent into the Marines. I still have his reply displayed above my desk. He said that he only encouraged two of us to enlist, and for the same reason, "I knew that you could do better than what you did at Hastings".
Both of us enlisted in the Marines, got out and went to college, taught Physical Education and coached. Kind of like he cloned us.
Coach Bub is now on guard duty, guarding the streets of Heaven.

Dick was a special guy. I knew and worked with him as his assistant and also head baseball coach from 1969
He was a family man, loved kids, loved coaching, and above all was a Korean War Marine.
He continued to honor the Hastings community after his retirement with his leadership in the Academic and Athletic Hastings Hall of Fame. God be with you Dick
